Ski

Cruise, carve, repeat.

High in the mountains, the world is sharp and silent. The air is thin, the snow untouched, stretching in endless white beneath the towering peaks. The skis cut through powder, each turn carving a path through the pristine slope. The wind roars past, the cold biting at your face, but all you feel is the rush—the perfect blend of control and surrender.

A guide to Ski Touring

What is ski touring?

Ski touring, also known as alpine touring or radonnée, is the ultimate way to explore untouched mountain landscapes. Using specially designed skis or a splitboard with climbing skins, you can ascend the slopes without sliding back—earning every turn as you climb.

Once you reach the summit, the real reward begins. Peel off your climbing skins, take in the breathtaking views, and enjoy an epic descent, hopefully in fresh, untouched powder.

New to ski touring? We recommend starting with a guided tour or course to build your confidence. Navigating the backcountry requires knowledge of avalanche safety, terrain awareness, and proper equipment. Many of our partners offer courses for beginners and advanced ski mountaineers, ensuring you can explore safely while making the most of your adventure.

Guided ski touring or self-guided?

Guided Ski Tour

A guided ski tour is the best choice if you want expert knowledge, added safety, and a stress-free experience. A professional guide will:

  • Lead you through the best terrain based on conditions and skill level
  • Provide avalanche safety expertise and risk assessment
  • Help improve your technique and backcountry skills
  • Share local insights for an unforgettable adventure

Best for: Beginners, those unfamiliar with the area, or anyone who prioritizes safety and expert guidance.

Self-Guided Ski Tour

A self-guided ski tour gives you complete freedom to explore at your own pace. You’ll need to:

  • Plan your route and check avalanche forecasts
  • Bring and know how to use avalanche safety gear (beacon, probe, shovel)
  • Have strong navigation skills and backcountry experience
  • Be prepared for changing weather and conditions

Best for: Experienced ski tourers with solid backcountry knowledge who want the flexibility to explore on their own.

What kind of equipment is needed?

Choose the Right Skis (or Splitboard!)

Ski touring equipment comes in a variety of brands and designs, each suited for different conditions. If you’re new to ski touring, consider renting gear to ensure you have the right setup for your adventure. Many mountain stations offer rental services, and some even provide discounts for members.

For snowboarders, a splitboard is a great alternative to touring skis. It splits in half for the ascent, functioning like skis, and then reassembles into a snowboard for the descent—giving you the best of both worlds!

Safety First – Essential Equipment

A helmet is just as crucial for ski touring as it is for any type of skiing—always wear one. Every member of your group should carry a full avalanche safety kit, including:

  • Transceiver (beacon)
  • Shovel
  • Avalanche probe
  • Helmet
  • Windproof bivy sack

You’ll also need a backpack (35-45L) to carry:

  • Map & compass for navigation
  • First aid kit for emergencies
  • Sunscreen to protect against UV exposure at high altitudes

Dress Smart – Layer Up

When setting out, avoid overdressing—you’ll warm up quickly on the ascent. The key to staying comfortable is layering:

  • Base layers (wool or synthetic) – Wicks moisture and keeps you warm, even when sweating.
  • Mid-layer (fleece or light insulation) – Provides warmth when needed.
  • Outer shell (windproof & waterproof) – Shields you from wind and snow while allowing movement.
  • Insulated jacket (down or synthetic) – Essential for breaks and colder conditions.
  • Neck gaiter (buff) – Versatile for keeping your neck, face, or head warm.
  • Sunglasses or ski goggles – Protect your eyes from sun glare and wind.

By choosing the right gear and dressing appropriately, you’ll maximize both safety and comfort on your ski touring adventure. Ready to hit the backcountry? Explore ski touring options with Beyond Urban!
